429 dollars vs about 300 dollars: the AU reality
US comparisons pitch the AirPods Pro 3 against the Sony WF-1000XM5 at $249 vs $299. Australia flips the script: the AirPods Pro 3 are AU$429, while the XM5 streets at around AU$300. That price gap changes the value conclusion entirely. Here is the Australia-specific verdict.
No AU outlet has written this comparison properly. The American pricing story does not apply here, and the Australian street-price reality makes this a very different decision from the one US reviewers describe.
AirPods Pro 3: the specs
Launched 9 September 2025 at AU$429 (up from the Pro 2 AU$399). New tricks: heart-rate sensing, Live Translation via Apple Intelligence, an ANC claim of up to 2x the Pro 2, 8 hours of ANC playback per charge, IP57 dust and water resistance, and a hearing-health suite.
The catch is ecosystem lock-in: the best features need an iPhone, and Android users lose most of what makes them special. Heart-rate sensing, Live Translation and the advanced hearing features are all gated behind Apple hardware and Apple Intelligence. On Android, you are paying AU$429 for very good earbuds with basic functionality.
Sony WF-1000XM5: the specs
The XM5 launched at AU$419 RRP, now AU$349.95 at Sony AU, with street prices of AU$295 to $328 (from AU$279 at Kogan). You get LDAC hi-res wireless, 8h + 24h battery, and IPX4. It is a 2023 model superseded by the XM6 at AU$499.95.
That supersession matters: the XM5 discount is structural, not temporary. With the flagship slot taken by the XM6, the XM5 will keep dropping. This is not a sale that ends. It is a permanent repricing as the older model. Buy it as the value play it has become, not as a flagship.
The XM6 blind spot
Before you buy either, look at the Sony WF-1000XM6 at AU$499.95 (see our Sony WF-1000XM6 Australia briefing). If you want Sony latest, that is the one. But it makes the discounted XM5 the value play. Our rule: XM5 only under about AU$320 street, never at AU$399. At AU$399 you are paying too close to the XM6 for a superseded model.
Which should you buy?
iPhone owner: AirPods Pro 3 at AU$429 (Worth it). You get the full experience: heart-rate sensing, Live Translation, hearing health, seamless Apple integration. The AU$429 price is fair for what iPhone users receive.
Android or LDAC user: Sony XM5, but only under about AU$320 street (Wait for a deal). You get LDAC hi-res audio, excellent ANC and no ecosystem penalty. At street prices it is a bargain. At AU$399 it is not.
The phone in your pocket decides this one. Do not buy AirPods Pro 3 for an Android phone. Do not pay AU$399 for the XM5 when street prices are under $330 and falling.
Where to buy
AirPods Pro 3: Apple AU and JB Hi-Fi ($429). Sony WF-1000XM5: Sony AU ($349.95), JB Hi-Fi ($399), street $295 to $328 (Kogan from $279).
Our verdict
Split. Buy for your phone. iPhone owners get the full AirPods Pro 3 experience at AU$429. Everyone else should take the Sony XM5 at street prices and pocket the difference. The XM6 blind spot means the XM5 will only get cheaper.
