Quick verdict
The 2026 foldable showdown is real: Apple’s first foldable, the iPhone Duo at $3,499, goes up against Samsung’s eighth-generation Galaxy Z Fold 8 at $2,699. That’s an $800 price gap for two book-style foldables with 7.6-inch inner displays. Samsung brings the refined hardware — thinner, lighter, and with a mature folding-app ecosystem. Apple brings the A20 Pro chip, Apple Pencil support, and the iOS ecosystem. Our take: unless you’re locked into Apple’s world, the Fold 8 is the better foldable buy right now. One caveat — the Duo doesn’t go on sale until 23 October, so no independent reviews exist yet; everything on Apple’s side comes from the launch.
Australian price and where to buy
Here’s the price picture (checked 8 October 2026):
iPhone Duo — from $3,499 (256GB). Apple’s Australian pricing runs $3,499 for 256GB, $3,899 for 512GB, $4,699 for 1TB, and $5,899 for the 2TB model. Pre-orders open 16 October at 10:00 pm AEST, with delivery and in-store availability from 23 October. Orders go through apple.com/au, the Apple Store app, Apple Stores, carriers and partner stores.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 — from $2,699 (12GB + 256GB). Samsung’s official Australian RRP is $2,699 for 256GB, $2,999 for 512GB and $3,599 for 1TB. It’s already on sale — launched 14 August — through The Good Guys and JB Hi-Fi at the $2,699 RRP.
The gap: $800 at the base 256GB tier, and Apple charges more at every storage step. One thing to know: Samsung also sells a Z Fold 8 Ultra from $2,999 — that’s the direct successor to the Fold 7, while the Fold 8 is a new wider form factor. If you want Samsung’s best foldable cameras, the Ultra is the one; the Fold 8 is the mainstream pick.
Release dates and availability
The Fold 8 has been on Australian shelves since 14 August 2026 — two months of real-world reviews, street pricing and carrier deals. The iPhone Duo was announced on 9 September 2026 at Apple’s September event, with Australian pre-orders from 16 October and sales starting 23 October as part of a 70+ country first wave. Practically: you can walk into a store and buy the Samsung today; the Apple is still a fortnight away, and launch-day stock on a brand-new Apple form factor typically sells through fast.
Design and displays: thinner, lighter vs first-gen
Both are book-style foldables with a phone-sized cover screen and a tablet-sized inner display — but the dimensions tell a story. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is 201 grams, 4.5mm thick unfolded and 9.7mm folded — Samsung calls it the world’s lightest fold. The iPhone Duo is 254 grams, 5.2mm unfolded and 11.3mm folded, with a titanium chassis and Ceramic Shield 2 front and back. The Samsung is meaningfully thinner and over 50g lighter — that’s a phone-and-a-half of difference in your pocket.
On screens, both offer a 7.6-inch inner display, but the shapes differ. Samsung went wide this year: a 5.5-inch cover screen and a 4:3 inner display (1,848 × 2,448, Dynamic AMOLED 2X, 120Hz, anti-reflective) pitched at reading, video and split-screen multitasking. Apple’s inner panel is a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR with a nano-texture matte finish; both of Apple’s screens support ProMotion and hit 3,000 nits peak brightness outdoors.
Apple’s standout hardware idea is the replaceable protective layer over the inner display — a user-swappable top film with a $19 AppleCare+ replacement, meant to address the scratching that plagues all folding screens. Samsung’s crease, per independent testing, is very shallow and barely perceptible. Neither phone has a visible crease problem anymore; Apple’s approach is about long-term maintenance, Samsung’s about the crease itself being minimal.
Performance: A20 Pro vs Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5
The A20 Pro is Apple’s first 2-nanometre phone chip: 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU and dual 16-core neural engines, with Apple claiming up to 20% faster CPU and 40% faster GPU performance than the A19 Pro. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy powers the Fold 8, paired with 12GB of RAM (16GB on the 1TB model).
On paper, Apple’s chip should win raw benchmarks — it usually does. But be honest with yourself: both chips will obliterate anything a phone does in 2026, and nobody has benchmarked the Duo yet because it isn’t on sale. The performance difference that actually matters is software: iOS 27.1 and Apple’s app ecosystem on a folding screen (where Apple is starting from zero) versus Android 17 with One UI 9, where Samsung has eight generations of folding-specific multitasking refinement. Samsung also promises seven years of OS updates.
Cameras: Samsung’s clearest win
This is the least close category. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has dual 50MP rear cameras — a 50MP wide (f/1.8, OIS, 2x optical-quality zoom) plus a 50MP ultrawide — with a 10MP cover selfie camera. Reviewers rate them as genuinely good, if a step behind Samsung’s Ultra-tier camera hardware.
Apple’s camera story for the Duo is thinner: a 12MP punch-hole camera on the 5.4-inch outer screen and a 12MP under-display camera beneath the inner screen. Apple has said far less about the Duo’s rear camera system than about its displays and chip, which is usually a sign. If photography matters to you — and at $3,499 it should — the Fold 8 is the safer bet until independent Duo camera tests land.
Battery and charging
The Fold 8 packs a 4,800mAh dual battery with 45W wired charging (about 63% in 30 minutes) and 20W wireless charging, plus Wireless PowerShare. Apple quotes the Duo at up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display and 31 hours on the inner — strong claims, but manufacturer video-playback figures and real-world folding-phone battery life are different things. The Fold 8 also carries an IP48 rating (water resistant, limited dust protection) — a real durability edge in a category where dust ingress kills hinges.
Software and ecosystem: the real decision
Strip away the spec sheets and this comparison is about ecosystems. The Fold 8 runs Android 17 with Galaxy AI, Google Gemini, and eight years of Samsung’s folding multitasking — split-screen, Flex Mode, taskbar-style app switching that actually works on a folding canvas. The Duo runs iOS 27.1 with Apple Intelligence, and its killer feature is Apple Pencil support on both displays (USB-C Pencil, arriving later in 2026) — something no Samsung foldable offers, since the Fold 8 has no stylus support at all.
The honest framing, as we said in our iPhone Duo worth-it verdict: Apple isn’t selling a better foldable. It’s selling a foldable for people who won’t buy Samsung. If your life is iMessage, AirDrop, Apple Watch and Mac — the Fold 8’s hardware advantages won’t tempt you. If you’re platform-agnostic, Samsung gives you more phone for $800 less.
Who should buy which
Buy the Galaxy Z Fold 8 if: you want the best foldable hardware value in Australia right now — thinner, lighter, better cameras, proven hinge, mature folding software, IP48 rating — and you can live in (or switch to) Android. At $2,699 it’s $800 cheaper than the Duo and available today.
Buy the iPhone Duo if: you’re all-in on Apple and have been waiting years for a folding iPhone, you want Apple Pencil on a folding display, or you trust first-generation Apple hardware enough to pay the early-adopter tax. Just know you’re paying $3,499 for a first-gen device with no independent reviews yet.
Buy neither (yet) if: you’re price-sensitive — both of these are luxury purchases, and Samsung’s foldables historically discount within months of launch. The Duo’s price, by contrast, will likely stay glued to $3,499 for a year.
Our verdict
Right now, in Australia, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 wins: it’s $800 cheaper, thinner, lighter, has better cameras, is actually on sale, and runs the most mature folding software in the industry. The iPhone Duo’s case rests on the A20 Pro, Apple Pencil support and the gravitational pull of the Apple ecosystem — real advantages, but not $800 worth for most buyers, and not yet independently tested.
The longer game is more interesting. Apple entering foldables will grow the whole category — early signs already show Samsung’s foldable sales lifting on the Duo’s announcement halo. If the Duo sells, expect the Duo 2 to close the hardware gap fast. But buying advice is about today: today, the Fold 8 is the foldable to buy. Frequently asked questions
Which is cheaper, the iPhone Duo or the Galaxy Z Fold 8?
The Galaxy Z Fold 8, by $800. It starts at $2,699 (256GB) in Australia versus $3,499 for the base iPhone Duo (256GB). The gap persists at higher storage tiers: $2,999 vs $3,899 at 512GB. Prices checked 8 October 2026.
Which foldable has the better display?
Both have 7.6-inch inner displays, but different strengths. The Fold 8’s 4:3 AMOLED panel with 120Hz and anti-reflective coating is better shaped for video and reading. The Duo offers 3,000-nit peak brightness, ProMotion on both screens, a nano-texture matte finish, and a user-replaceable protective layer — a genuinely novel durability idea.
Is the A20 Pro faster than the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5?
Probably, but nobody knows yet. Apple claims the A20 Pro is up to 20% faster than the A19 Pro on CPU and 40% on GPU, but the iPhone Duo isn’t on sale until 23 October 2026, so no independent head-to-head benchmarks exist. Both chips are far beyond what phone apps demand.
Does the iPhone Duo support Apple Pencil?
Yes — Apple Pencil (USB-C) support on both displays arrives later in 2026, according to Apple’s announcement. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has no stylus support, which makes the Duo the only current foldable option for pen input on a folding screen.
Should I wait for the iPhone Duo or buy the Galaxy Z Fold 8 now?
If you’re in Apple’s ecosystem and want a folding iPhone, pre-orders open 16 October with sales from 23 October — but expect first-gen growing pains and no discounts. If you want the best foldable value today, the Fold 8 is on sale now at $2,699, $800 less, with mature software and proven hardware. Platform loyalty is the tiebreaker.
