Quick verdict
The Legend of Zelda turns 40 in 2026, and Nintendo is celebrating with a special-edition Nintendo Switch 2 covered in Triforce motifs and finished in Zelda’s classic green and gold. It launches in Australia on 29 October 2026 at $799.95 — and the headline number is better than it looks: after Nintendo’s 1 September 2026 price rise pushed the standard Switch 2 to $769.95, this collector’s edition costs just $30 more than the plain console. Our take: if you’re buying a Switch 2 anyway this year and love Zelda, this is an easy choice. If you already own a Switch 2, the design alone is a hard $799.95 to justify.
Switch 2 Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition: Australian price and where to pre-order
Here’s the price picture (checked 8 October 2026):
$799.95 — Nintendo Store Australia (official store, product page live).
$799 — Target Australia (free delivery, Flybuys points on the purchase).
$799 — Big W (online only; if the price drops before release day and you’ve paid upfront, Big W refunds the difference).
$799 — JB Hi-Fi (pre-orders open).
That’s a tight spread — a single dollar separates Nintendo’s own store from the big retailers. Prices from Nintendo Store Australia, Target, Big W and JB Hi-Fi.
A note on Big W: it’s currently listing the console as online only, with store pickup available after the release date. Nintendo Store Australia is the only place selling the full anniversary range (console, Pro Controller with stand, and carrying case) in one basket.
Release date
The Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition launches on 29 October 2026 — that’s confirmed across Nintendo’s store and every Australian retailer listing. The matching accessories (Pro Controller and carrying case) release the same day. One week later, on 5 November 2026, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time arrives for Nintendo Switch 2 — sold separately, and notably not in the console box (more on that below).
Australia was one of the first regions to open pre-orders, which is why local retailers have had listings up since mid-September. The edition is limited, and OzBargain posters were already flagging sell-out risk within days of pre-orders opening.
The design: what’s special about it
This is a proper special edition, not a sticker job. The console, dock and Joy-Con 2 controllers all carry Zelda-series motifs in a palette of green, black and gold:
Triforce motifs appear on the back of the console and on the dock (Nintendo’s own description puts the golden Triforce symbol on the front of the dock, over a black-and-gold decorated surface). Patterns and symbols inspired by the series decorate the back of the system and the dock itself.
Green and gold Joy-Con 2 controllers — the included Joy-Con 2 (L) and (R) use Zelda’s classic green and gold colours along with series-inspired decorations. The wrist straps are special designs too.
Underneath the design, it’s the same Switch 2 hardware: 7.9-inch LCD touchscreen with HDR and up to 120fps, a dock that supports 4K output on compatible TVs, 256GB of internal storage (expandable with microSD Express), GameChat, and magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers with mouse controls. It plays physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.
What’s in the box
Nintendo’s listing gives the full box contents:
– Nintendo Switch 2 console (special Zelda 40th Anniversary design)
– Joy-Con 2 (L) — special design
– Joy-Con 2 (R) — special design
– Nintendo Switch 2 dock — special design
– Joy-Con 2 grip
– Joy-Con 2 straps (special design) × 2
– Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter
– USB-C charging cable
– Ultra High Speed HDMI cable
What you don’t get: the game
The honest catch: no game is included in the box. Nintendo confirms “game not included” on every retailer listing. The anniversary title of the moment — the revamped Ocarina of Time for Switch 2, launching 5 November — must be bought separately (it’s up for pre-order around $109–$109.95 at Australian retailers).
This is standard Nintendo practice for special-edition consoles, but it matters for the value math: $799.95 gets you the hardware in collector livery, and you’ll still want a game. If you were hoping for a bundle, this isn’t one.
Matching accessories: Pro Controller and carrying case
The anniversary range extends beyond the console:
Pro Controller — Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition. The same Zelda design on the Switch 2 Pro Controller. Nintendo’s own store sells it at $149.95 with an exclusive display stand; selected retailers carry a version without the stand at $134. The stand version is a Nintendo Store exclusive, so if you want the display piece, order direct.
Carrying case with screen protector. Also in the anniversary design, for those who take their Switch 2 out of the house. (Pricing was still being confirmed by retailers at the time of writing — check Nintendo’s store for the current price.)
None of the accessories are required, obviously — but the Pro Controller with the stand is the part of the range most likely to sell out and never restock, given the exclusive distribution.
The $30 value question
Here’s where the Zelda edition becomes genuinely interesting. The standard Switch 2 launched in Australia at $699.95, but Nintendo raised prices globally from 1 September 2026 — the standard console now retails at $769.95. At $799.95, the Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition is only $30 more than the plain black console.
For $30 you get: the Triforce-designed console, dock and Joy-Con 2, special straps, and a limited-edition box. There is no hardware upgrade — performance is identical — but as special editions go, this is about the smallest premium Nintendo has ever charged for one. For collectors, the resale and keep-value angle is real: limited Nintendo hardware historically holds value far better than standard consoles.
Pre-order tips: securing one
Order sooner rather than later. OzBargain users flagged stock pressure within days of pre-orders opening in September — limited Nintendo hardware sells through, and this one has the triple hook of Zelda, a milestone anniversary and a tiny price premium. Target, Big W and JB Hi-Fi all show pre-orders live now.
Pick your retailer on terms, not just price. Prices are within a dollar everywhere, so choose on policy: Big W refunds the difference if the price drops before release; Target gives Flybuys points; Nintendo’s store is the only place to bundle the stand-version Pro Controller and case with the console.
Don’t expect a discount. Special-edition Nintendo consoles essentially never get discounted before launch, and there’s no Mario Kart World-style game bundle here to sweeten the deal. $799 is the price.
Who should pre-order it
Pre-order it if you don’t yet own a Switch 2 and have any affection for Zelda — at $30 over the standard console, the special edition is effectively the default recommendation for new buyers this October. Pre-order it if you’re a collector: limited Nintendo hardware with a stand-exclusive controller is exactly the kind of thing that becomes scarce fast.
Think twice if you already own a standard Switch 2 — you’re paying $799.95 for a design refresh, since the hardware is identical. And if you only care about playing Ocarina of Time on 5 November, any Switch 2 will do; the anniversary console isn’t required.
Our verdict
Verdict: the Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition is the easiest special-edition recommendation Nintendo has made in years. $799.95 with a 29 October release date, the full Triforce design treatment, and a premium of just $30 over the standard Switch 2’s new $769.95 price — it barely costs more than the plain console while being far more special. Secure a pre-order now if you want one; limited editions don’t wait. Just remember to budget for a game, because the box doesn’t include one.

It’s $799.95 at Nintendo Store Australia and $799 at Target, Big W and JB Hi-Fi. Prices checked 8 October 2026. That’s just $30 more than the standard Switch 2’s current $769.95 price after Nintendo’s September 2026 price rise.
When does the Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 release?
29 October 2026 in Australia. The matching Pro Controller and carrying case release the same day. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Switch 2 follows one week later, on 5 November 2026, and is sold separately.
What’s included in the box?
The special-design console, Joy-Con 2 controllers (L and R, special design), special-design dock, Joy-Con 2 grip, two special-design wrist straps, AC adapter, USB-C charging cable and Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. No game is included.
Does the Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition come with a Zelda game?
No — Nintendo confirms “game not included” on all retailer listings. The revamped Ocarina of Time for Switch 2 launches separately on 5 November 2026 (around $109–$109.95 at Australian retailers) and must be purchased on its own.
Is it worth pre-ordering over the standard Switch 2?
If you don’t own a Switch 2 yet, yes — at only $30 over the standard console’s $769.95 price, the limited Zelda design is an easy choice and limited editions can sell out. If you already own a Switch 2, you’re paying $799.95 purely for the design, since the hardware is identical.
