Apple AirPods 5 Australia: $219 Price, What’s New

Audio & Entertainment Published 8 October 2026 Updated 8 October 2026

Quick verdict

The Apple AirPods 5 do something Apple almost never does: they get cheaper and better at the same time. At $219 in Australia, the standard model now includes Active Noise Cancellation — the feature that cost $299 on the AirPods 4. Apple claims 50% better noise reduction than the AirPods 4’s ANC, plus a redesigned acoustic system, longer battery and Live Translation. A $249 version adds a wireless charging case, on-stem volume swipe and an extra hour of battery. Our first look: the easiest AirPods recommendation Apple has made in years — unless you need the sealed fit and stronger ANC of the $429 AirPods Pro 3.

AirPods 5 Australian price and where to buy

Apple’s Australian pricing is straightforward — both figures include GST:

$219 — AirPods 5 (USB-C charging case, ANC standard).

$249 — AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case (adds wireless charging, on-stem volume swipe and longer battery).

Where to buy in Australia (prices checked 8 October 2026): Apple Australia has both at $219/$249. JB Hi-Fi lists them at $219 and $249. Costco Australia has the wireless charging case model at $229.99 — $19 under Apple’s price and the cheapest we’ve seen for that model.

No discounts on the standard $219 model yet — it’s only three weeks old. But Costco’s $229.99 on the wireless model shows deals are already appearing, so check before you pay full price.

Release date and availability

Apple announced the AirPods 5 on 9 September 2026 at its “Surprise and Shine” event, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro range. Pre-orders opened the same day and they went on sale in Australia on 18 September 2026. Both models come in white only.

AirPods 5 vs AirPods 4: what’s actually new?

This is the question that matters, because the AirPods 4 (2024) came in two versions: $219 without ANC and $299 with ANC. Here’s the straight comparison:

ANC is now standard. Both AirPods 5 models include Active Noise Cancellation. On the AirPods 4, you had to pay $299 for the ANC version. The AirPods 5 give you ANC at $219 — $80 cheaper than before.

Better noise reduction (claimed). Apple says the new ANC removes up to 50% more noise than the AirPods 4’s — the best ANC it’s managed in an open-ear design. Worth remembering: Apple’s claim, not an independent lab test yet. Open-ear buds have no silicone seal, so physics still favours sealed earbuds for raw noise blocking.

New acoustic architecture. A redesigned multiport acoustic system (borrowed from the AirPods Pro 3 playbook) with next-generation Adaptive EQ and Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking. The chip stays the Apple H2 with Bluetooth 5.3 — Apple reworked the sound, not the silicon.

Longer battery. The wireless charging case model runs up to 5 hours with ANC on (up from 4) and 22 hours total with the case (up from 20).

Live Translation. Pair with an iPhone running Apple Intelligence and the AirPods 5 can translate conversations in real time — genuinely useful in a country where more than a fifth of people speak a language other than English at home.

Tougher build. IP57 dust, sweat and water resistance, up from IP54 on the AirPods 4.

New controls (wireless model). On-stem volume swipe — a first for Apple’s open-ear buds.

Key features at a glance

Active Noise Cancellation, standard. Plus Transparency mode, Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness — the full noise-control suite, no upsell required.

Personalized Spatial Audio. Dynamic head tracking tuned to your ear shape via the new Adaptive EQ.

Live Translation + Siri AI. Real-time translation, hands-free Siri AI, Voice Isolation for calls and Siri Interactions (nod or shake to respond).

Battery and charging. Standard model: 4 hours with ANC on, 20 hours total with the USB-C case. Wireless model: 5 hours with ANC on, 22 hours total — and the case charges via Qi, an Apple Watch charger or USB-C.

IP57 resistance. Dust, sweat and water resistance that survives workouts and rain.

AirPods 5 vs AirPods 5 Wireless Charging Case: which to buy?

The $30 gap buys three things: a wireless charging case, on-stem volume swipe controls, and an extra hour of battery (5 vs 4 hours with ANC, 22 vs 20 total). Everything else — ANC, sound, chip, features — is identical.

For most people the $249 model is the better buy — $30 for swipe volume and wireless charging is reasonable. But if you always charge via cable and don’t care about swipe controls, the $219 model is the same earbud for less.

How it compares to rivals

vs AirPods Pro 3 ($429). The Pro 3 costs $210 more and earns it: sealed silicone-tip fit, much stronger ANC (Apple claims 2x the Pro 2), heart-rate sensing and hearing-health features. If you want the best noise cancellation Apple makes and don’t mind tips in your ears, the Pro 3 is still the flagship. If you hate the sealed feeling, the AirPods 5 get you most of the smarts for half the money. Read our AirPods Pro 3 vs Sony XM5 comparison.

vs Sony WF-1000XM6 ($499.95 RRP, street ~$399–$449). Sony’s flagship has LDAC, an 8-hour ANC battery and superb noise cancelling — but it’s Android-tuned, costs far more, and you lose Apple’s ecosystem tricks. For iPhone owners, the AirPods 5 is the smarter buy at less than half the price.

vs Samsung Galaxy Buds 4 Pro ($399). Samsung’s answer for Galaxy owners — but at $399 it’s $180 more than the AirPods 5, and its best features need a Samsung phone. iPhone users should stay with Apple; Samsung users have their own obvious pick. See our Galaxy S26 Ultra verdict for where Samsung’s 2026 lineup sits.

vs AirPods 4 (clearance). The old model is now the bargain bin option — past sales have pushed it as low as ~$158. If you find one cheap and don’t care about ANC, it’s a steal. But at anything near $219, the AirPods 5 make the old non-ANC model impossible to justify.

Who should upgrade?

AirPods 3 or older: yes — this is a big jump in every direction.

AirPods 4 without ANC: yes if you want noise cancellation. $219 now buys what cost $299 two years ago.

AirPods 4 with ANC: only if you specifically want the improved ANC, Live Translation or swipe volume. Otherwise the upgrade is marginal — yours are still excellent.

AirPods Pro 2 or Pro 3: no. The sealed fit and stronger ANC still win for noise blocking, and you’re not gaining anything meaningful.

Worth it? Our first-look verdict

Here’s the honest take. At $219 with ANC standard, the AirPods 5 are the best-value AirPods Apple has ever made — $80 cheaper than the cheapest way to get Apple ANC two years ago, with better sound, better battery and genuinely useful new tricks like Live Translation. The $249 wireless model is the sweet spot for most buyers.

The caveats: Apple’s “50% better” ANC claim is Apple’s own, and independent tests haven’t landed yet. Open-ear physics means sealed buds still block more noise — if silence is the mission, the Pro 3 remains the answer. And battery life is fine rather than class-leading.

First-look verdict: the easiest AirPods recommendation in years. Buy the $219 model if you want great everyday earbuds; spend the extra $30 on the wireless case if you value swipe volume and cable-free charging. And check Costco’s $229.99 before paying $249.
